Al Jolson
Asa Al Jolson Yoelson (born the May 26th 1886 in Srednik (Lithuania), deceased the October 23rd 1950 with San Francisco (California) was an extremely appreciated singer and an actor whose career lasted of 1911 until its death in 1950. It was one of the most popular artists of music hall of the 20th century in the USA and its influence touched great names of the jazz like Bing Crosby or Eddie Fisher.
Biography
Jolson born in the Lithuanian city of Srednik, named Asa Yoelson. It was Jewish. In its more tender childhood, his/her parents, Moshe Reuben Yoelson and Naomi Ettas Cantor, and he even, emigrated towards the United States of America. Its first original name, probably transferred by the services of immigration was Hesselson. His/her father was cantor ( hazan ) and, incidentally one of the circonciseurs ( mohel ) of the community Talmud Torah (currently Ohev Sholom Talmud Torah), with Washington, D.CJolson became a popular singer with New York, since 1898, when him and his/her brother diverted the American troops during the conflict opposing Spain and the USA in 1898. It, gradually, developed the key elements of its artistic service: make-up of the face in black, gestural exuberant, style of song, airs whistled, and a direct contact with its public.
In 1911, it changes its artistic image with the theater of Broadway, in the part Beautiful Paree, by taking an appearance of star. It started to record and quickly became known on the international scene by its extraordinary scenic presence and his personal relationship with the spectators. No other artist knew in Broadway as much popularity and such a long career which lasted nearly 30 years (of 1911 to 1940). The howls or supplications of the spectators, often prevented the spectacle from continuing, so much was powerful the presence of Al Jolson. At the time of a spectacle in Boston, the show had to be stopped during 45 minutes. One said of him that it had a personality " électrique" , related to its ability to make think of each spectator whom he sang only for her or him.
However, it is more known having been the first human voice heard in first talking film, the Singer of jazz (1927)| The Jazz Singer . In this film, Al Jolson interpreted the song " Mammy" with its face made up in black.
When it signed in Warners for a series of talking films, Al Jolson played in the Insane one singing|The Singing Fool in 1928 - a dramatic film, history in which an artist wanted to continue his spectacles in spite of the death of his son - and the sad song of this film " Sony Boy" , became the first American disc to be sold to 3 million specimen.
Among the many very popular songs, one can quote " You Made Coils Me You (I Didn' T Want to Do It) " , " Rock'n'roll-HAVe-Bye Your Baby With has Dixie Melody" , " Swanee" (written by George Gershwin), " April Showers" , " Toot, Toot, Tootsie, Goodbye" , " California, Young stag I Come" , " When the Red, Red Robin Comes Bob-Bob-Bobbin' Along" , " Sony Boy" , and " Avalon".
Al Jolson was the first artist to be sold more than 10 million discs. Whereas there did not exist yet of hit-parade, Joel Whitburn (his archivist) did a statistical work on N°1 of the songs of the period 1890-1954. Its estimate was that Al Jolson songs were 23 times N° 1. Whitburn calculated that Al Jolson would have been at the head during 114 weeks.
AL Jolson was married with the actress Ruby Keeler of 1928 to 1939, moment when they divorced.
Radio and television
After having left the scene of Broadway, Al Jolson became a high-speed motorboat of the radio. `' The Al Jolson Show'' was held of 1933 to 1939, 1942 to 1943 and 1947 to 1949. Its emissions always among were listened. In 1950, Al Jolson signs with CBS Télévision, but dies in October of this same year before to have begun television programs.
