Al-Hakam Ier

Abû Al `Âs “Al-Murtazî” Al-Hakam Ben Hichâm or Al-Hakam Ier (Arab: rear RTL أبوالعاص “المرتضى” الحكمبنهشام), was born in 766, it succeeded his/her father Hichâm I {{er}} like emir Omeyyade de Cordoue in 796. He died in 822).

Biography

He succeeded his father who, for unknown reasons, had preferred it with his older brother Abd el-Malik. Its reign started with difficulties: in 796, the king of Asturies Alphonse II request the assistance of Charlemagne and takes Lisbon into 798. An Al-Hakam uncle had also asked for the assistance of Charlemagne which decides into 798 the Al-Andalus attack. The preparations are delayed, and in 800, the prince Louis plunders the towns of Huesca and Lérida and puts the seat in front of Barcelona, which it takes in 803.

The governors benefitted from its defeats to revolt, among which powerful the Banu Qasi and it had to found a reign of terror to come to end from its disorders. Thus, certain Ubaid Allah seized the power with Tolède and proclaimed its independence, and Al-Hakam did not hesitate to make massacre all notable cities ( Journée of the Pit ), to impress the population of the city. Mérida undergoes during seven years the repression of a revolt, and the town of Cordoue was not saved either (818, Révolte of the Suburb ).

It had not succeeded in preventing the projection of the Francs, but successes of the latter were not at the level of the average volunteers. Its reign consolidated the capacity of the emir enormously, and it left with his son Abd Al-Rahman II a pacified and stable state, which allowed this last to initiate Andalusian civilization. Itself was not foreign with arts, because it was him which invited to Cordoue the poête Ziriab, which introduced in Al-Andalusians of many Eastern practices, in the fields of arts, of sciences and the cultures.
