History of the name

Aix-the-baths, city founded in Ier century of our era, only is seldom quoted in the texts epigraphic, and never by the known Roman authors. However, two inscriptions preserved by the archaeological museum mention of Aquae (Water) and Aquensis (the inhabitants of the places of Water), and thus inform us about the name of this Vicus depend on the city of Vienna. The historians of the XIXe century sometimes subjected to the reader whimsical names and without historical base who strew still certain popularizing works. One can quote Aquae allobrogium, Aquae gratianae (inscription which decorated the pediment of the National Thermal baths of 1934 to 1968)… In the year 1011, we find Aquae name in the charter of donation of the royal ground of Aix (of Aquis) by the king of Burgundy Rodolphe III with his Ermengarde wife. Some texts of the Middle Ages mention Aquae grationapolis. This suffix stating simply that Aix belonged to the diocese of Grenoble. The first known mention of Aix-the-Baths appears in the files in September 1792, on a letter of a French soldier in convalescence with water of Aix. It is this name which appears then in all the official documents, the such deliberations of the Municipal council. In this beginning of the XIXe century, some literary texts make use of name: Aix in Savoy. However, this toponym is never employed in the administrative documents. Since 1954, the station of Aix-the-Baths, at the request of the Municipal council, names Aix-the-Baths - the Revard.
