Airport of Rotterdam
The airport of Rotterdam (officially named in Dutch Vliegveld Zestienhoven (airport of the sixteen courses) is located at Rotterdam with the Netherlands. It is the second regional airport per annum after the AƩroport of Eindhoven for the passenger traffic with more than one million passengers in 2004. Daily connections are ensured towards London, Hamburg and Berlin as well as flights charter.
History
After the Second world war, it was decided by the Dutch government that a second national airport after Schiphol was necessary. The town of Rotterdam had an airport vant war, the airport Waalhaven, but this last had been destroyed on suspicion to avoid its use by the German troops. Its rebuilding was not realistic, a new site was to be found.That Ci was the Polder Zestienhoven . The construction of the airport began in August 1955 and the airport opened officially in October 1956. Little time after, several international companies like Swissair, Lufthansa and Air France opened connections on Rotterdam. However in the Years 1970, of the projects of displacement or closing for constructions of house of has a stagnation of the traffic of the airport and at the beginning of the large airline companies, some towards Schipol (this major airport is distant only of 58 km of the center of Rotterdam). During about thirty year, the project of closing remained in the air but the economic growth of the Nineties involved an increase in the number of passengers and in 2001, it was to decide that the site of the airport would be maintained for at least 100 years.
