History
Before the Roman epoch, a oppidum of the name of Atura existed on the site of Surface. From this name, borrowed from the river Adour, as well derive the name from the town of Surface as that of the Tursan ( pagus aturensis ). It was occupied by the people of the Tarusates.
The borough was romanisé under the name of Vicus Julii .
Thereafter Aire became, with Toulouse, one of the two capitals of the kingdom Visigoth of Euric (466 - 484) then of Alaric II (484 - 507), and which promulgated in 506 there, its Bréviaire, condensed Roman law, one year before being overcome by Clovis.
It is during this period, in 476, that Quitterie, catholic princess of Spain, girl of “king” Caius and fleeing its applicant, would have been decapitated by the Visigoths ariens in Aire. Its head would have made there spout out a miraculous source. Its worship was very widespread in Gascogne (one pronounces " Quitèr.i"), where one made him cure headaches and madness. Surface becomes the seat of one évêché.
It is as in Aire, but in bottom, in the strengthened city bordering Adour, as an agreement had made to the 12th century between the king of England, Edouard Ier, and the bishop aturin, one granting its protection, the other a share of its incomes.
Surface lost its évêché with the Revolution. At the beginning of the 19th century, a reorganization of the dioceses of France (Legal settlements of 1801 and of 1817) joined together the dioceses of Surface and Dax. The principal seat of évêché was officially transferred in 1933 to Dax, city larger and served better by the train. The Cathédrale of Surface carries the title of Concathédrale.
The years to come should see the opening to the circulation of a deviation which will circumvent the city by the west and will cross Adour by a new bridge .
