Ahmed Boughéra El Ouafi
Ahmed Boughéra El Ouafi is a Athlète born on October 15th 1898 in Algérie and died on October 18th 1959 in Paris. It gains the gold medal in the marathon of the Olympic Games of summer of 1928 in Amsterdam, after having been champion of France of the speciality in 1924 and 1928.
Born Ouled Djellal close to Biskra in Algeria has (at the time of the French Colonisation), Ahmed engages in the French Army . One of its superiors notices its great capacities of runner and decides to send it to a sporting military competition in France. It gives a good impression over there and is authorized to take part in the qualifications of the marathon of the Olympic Games of summer of 1924. Vegetarian, Ahmed Boughéra El Ouafi is able to qualify himself and finishes its first Olympic marathon, seventh, carrying the colors of France whereas he from now on is laid off with CASG. This good performance authorized it to prepare more intensively, has just been engaged as machine operator at Renault in Boulogne-Billancourt (he manufactures from now on automobile bolts and rivets…).
With the Olympic Games of summer of 1928, it remains behind the leaders during the three quarters of the race then exceeds them 5 kilometers before the arrival. No participant catches up with it and it finishes first, with 26 seconds in advance on the second, Manuel Plaza. After this victory, between 1929 and 1930, it is given in spectacle to the the United States, where it runs against men and animals in exchange of a remuneration. At the time, the sportsmen of the Olympic Games were to be amateurs, and were not to live their talents, that prevented it from taking part in the following sporting tests.
It buys then a coffee with Paris with a partner. Deceived by this one, it loses its employment and does not find of it an other. April 10th, 1959, into full War with Algeria, FLN grapeshot consumers of the coffee of Saint Denis meadows of Paris, in which also Boughera El Ouafi is which finds death. It will be buried with Bobigny.
