Biography
The girl of Germanicus
Agrippine the Young person ( Agrippina minor ), girl of the general Germanicus, was born a lower November 6th in Germanie after his/her mother, Agrippine Elder the ( Agrippina maior ), had found refuge with her three children with Trier. Fearing the mutinies which had accommodated the advertisement of died of Auguste and the accession of Tibère to the capacity, the family of Germanicus had folded up itself near combined less dubious, the Trévires. The birthplace of Agrippine the Young person however seems to be Ara Ubiorum , which became Cologne. In 50, under the Principat of Claude, the place took the name of Colonia Augusta Agrippinensis in its honor (Agrippine is then Augusta ); its inhabitants were called Agrippinenses .In 17, Germanicus is recalled to Rome where one celebrates his triumph on May 26th. According to the historian Tacite, Which still added to the spectacle triumphs, it was the beauty of Germanicus and its tank, on which its five were enfants. Germanicus is in charge of a mission of inspection in the East, apparently with an aim of separating it from its troops, because of fears and the jealousy of Tibère. It seems that Agrippine the Young person remained with Rome during this voyage. In Antioche, Germanicus dies opportunely in October 19, probably poisoned on order of Tibère.
Consequently, Agrippine Elder the and its children are ballotés between the personal competitions and the businesses of State. At the time of the conspiracy of Séjan, Tibère interdict with the widow of Germanicus of remarier. After the death of his/her son Drusus, Tibère is contained more and more and the descendants of Germanicus make the expenses of them: the two elder ones are off-set or locked up, and their mother, Agrippine Elder the, is condemned to the exile. All three died under atrocious conditions and without to have found freedom.
In 28, Agrippine the Young person has 13 or 14 years, and marries Cneius Domitius Ahenobarbus, on the choice of Tibère: However Tibère, after having granted, in its presence, in Cn. Domitius its Agrippine grand-daughter, girl of Germanicus, ordered that the marriage was celebrated in the City. In the person of Domitius, it had, in addition to the seniority of the race, selected a blood close to that of Caesars; because it could be praised to have for Octavie grandmother and, by her, Auguste like grand-oncle. In 32, Cneius Domitius Ahenobarbus is Consul.
The mother of Néron
With Antium, the December 15th 37 with the rising of the sun, Agrippine is confined of a son, Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus, the future Néron. It was his/her only child.According to the Roman historians, Caligula maintained at that time the incestueuses relations with his/her three sisters, and did not hesitate with the prostituer with its favorites. At the beginning of the reign, the sisters of the emperor are surrounded by honors at the court, but in 39, shown of adultery and complicity in the plot of Mr. Aemilius Lepidus against the emperor, Agrippine and his sister Julia Livilla are condemned to the exile on the islands Pontiennes, exile which lasted until the principat of Claude in 41.
Agrippine would divorce its first husband then, makes assassinate its second husband Passienus Crispus, immensely rich person, to bind to the emperor Claude after the death of Messaline. The connection is initially semi-official by fear which the opinion condemns a inceste: Claude is indeed the uncle d' Agrippine. The marriage is officialized in 49 thanks to a subterfuge. Vitellius makes vote a motion by the Sénat obliging the emperor with remarier. At once, Claude hastens to conform to the pressing request of the Sénat and the Roman people. But it orders also expiatory sacrifices by the Pontife S for the inceste (“ what made laugh everyone ”, specifies Tacite).
Agrippine then obtains the return of exile of Sénèque which had been the tutor of Domitius, and manages to promise in marriage his/her son with Octavie, the girl of her own husband. Marriage concluded in 53, but ever consumed. By its influence near the emperor and his operations, Agrippine eliminates its last rivals (Lollia, Domitia Lepida) or potential (Calpurnia) and seizes the richnesses of several notable (Statilius Taurus).
Augusta is then the mistress of Pallas, a Affranchi richissime, close adviser of Claude. Always in 49, pushing its husband to imitate Auguste (but also Tibère which had adopted Germanicus), it obtains that his/her son is adopted by Claude and passes from the family of the Domitii to that of the Claudii : it takes then the name of Néron and becomes the rival (older) of Britannicus, the son of Claude and Messaline. Britannicus is insulated little by little: all is made to bring Néron to the capacity.
Finally, feeling itself in danger and benefitting from the absence of Narcisse, one of the most faithful advisers of Claude, Agrippine makes poison the emperor the October 13rd 54.
Too much authoritative, Agrippine is assassinated on the orders of his/her own son. “ Striking with the belly. ” (" ventrem feri") she says to the centurion come to kill it. She had survived before three attempts at poisoning, then with the shipwreck of the ship on which she was. It is only after the latter failure that Néron made it assassinate by its guards.
