African Theater
The African theater is a rich person paradox. Initially, because the Africa is often defined as a continent of orality (Amadou Hampâté Bâ). Indeed, although there exist innumerable traces of African writings during the centuries which preceded colonization, the transmission of the knowledge in many country is ritually based there on Conte S. It is indeed, in the villages, around the tree with palaver that the old ones, and the notable ones meet to organize the joint life their fellow-citizens. And these arbitrations often take the form of musical tales, more or less dramatized. There is thus a traditional and ancestral African theatricalness.
However, which one names today “African theater”, and which is a whole of quite alive artistic forms, is a heritage of the colonization of Africa by the Western nations. In this direction, the contemporary African theater falls under the current history of the French-speaking, anglophone or Portuguese-speaking theater. But at the same time, there are in the African theater a multidisciplinarity (Théâtre, Conte, Musique and Danse is frequently interfered indissociable way there), and an astonishing vitality, in particular on the level of the writing.
Moreover, perhaps because the theater is business of conflicts (in Greek, drama = action, conflict), the artists of theater, although minority, and confronted with immense material difficulties, are often with the outposts of the development policies cultural in Africa. Thus, one owes them a good part of the private cultural equipment of quality likely to flower on the continent (the actor studio of the director of the Ivory Coast Sidiki Bakaba, the Village Ki Yi of Abidjan (Ivory Coast), the International festival of Theater to the Bénin, the International Crossroads of Theater of Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), Space Linga Tere of Bangui (Central African Republic), Megablon Space and the Festival of realities of Bamako (Mali), the Theater of Intrigants and the Maloba Stable of Kinshasa in Congo, Meetings of International theater of the Cameroun to Yaounde…). Moreover, a big part of the activity of the artists of African theater is directed towards the “useful” theater (Théâtre of sensitizing, Théâtre forum…).
