Academy off St Martin in the Fields

The Academy off St Martin in the Fields is one of principal the Chamber orchestra English.

History

Founded in 1958 with London by Sir Neville Marriner, the first concert is given on November 13rd, 1959. The orchestra is initially made up only of the cords and occurs with the church St Martin-in-tea-Fields with Trafalgar Square. Then Neville Marriner includes the wind instruments and widens the repertory of the orchestra in order to realize more than 500 recordings with Academy (which is thus the chamber orchestra having engraved the most discs in the world).

The orchestra plays a fundamental role in the rebirth of the Baroque music in the middle of the 20th century, by proposing fluid and light interpretations repertory baroque (then traditional), on modern instruments. He thus announces the musical revolution of the " baroqueux" (Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Gustav Leonhardt,…) who use instruments of time to which Marriner yielded forever.

Life president, Neville Marriner always directs the orchestra even if it yielded the musical direction in the years 1970 initially to Iona Brown then with Kenneth Sillito in the years 1980. Today, the pianist Murray Perahia is the main leader of invited orchestra.

The chorus of Academy off St Martin in the Fields was created in 1975.

Repertory

The first recording of the Messie of Haendel remains a reference. The orchestra also carried out the selection and arrangements of the music of the films Amadeus and Titanic and is the interpreter of the choruses of the anthem of the Ligue of the Champions.
