Acace
Acace (death towards 140 on the Mount Ararat; it is called also Achaz or Akakios) was a Roman officer and a Christian martyr. One arranges it among the fourteen holy auxiliateurs. It is celebrated on June 22nd.
It is difficult, even impossible, to disentangle what returns to the history and the legend. One tends to confuse it with other martyrs of the same name, inter alia with Akakios (Agathius) (death in 303/304 with Constantinople) in which it legend also sees a captain of the imperial army.
In Hebrew his name means: “God holds”, and in Greek “the innocent one”. Since it had, to believe the legend of it, resisted all tortures and professed that in the future Christ would be her emperor, it was torn with branches of spines then crucifié. This is why one often represents it with a bush of spines or a crown of spines, but also with flag, large cross and sword. Other confusions or mixtures between the legends were worth to him also to be sometimes represented with episcopal badges. It is supposed to protect from the bad diseases and the anguish from the anguish.
