The territory of Pondichéry (in Tamoul: புதுவை, புதுச்சேரி or பாண்டிச்சேரி, in Hindi: पॉंडिचेरी, in English: Pondicherry) is made of four districts coming from old the French Établissements of India of Kârikal or Karaikal (wedged in the Tamil Nadu), Mahé (wedged in the Kerala), Pondichéry (wedged in the Tamil Nadu) and Yanaon or Yanam (wedged in the Andhra Pradesh).

As a territory yielded by the France to the India, the Territory of Pondichéry enjoys particular privileges - it is for example the area of the India where the alcohol is easiest to find, but also the least expensive.

There exists an important French-speaking community still today: there exists a French College and a French Institute which make this language the third more spoken on the territory of Pondichéry, after the tamoul and English.

The French Institute of Pondichéry. Created with the favor of the Treaty of transfer of the French establishments in India, the French Institute of Pondichéry was inaugurated on March 20th, 1955. It counts three departments, indology, ecology since its creation, and social sciences, created in 1988. A laboratory of geomatic is added to it which, in 1994, succeeded the section of cartography.

The city is also one of the seats of the French École of the Far East.
