Abd Al-Rahman III

Abû Al-Mutarraf Al-Nâsir Li-DIN Allah `rear-Rahman Abd Ben Muhammad , Abd Al-Rahman III or `rear-Rahman Abd III of which name is sometimes francized in Abdérame III , called Year-Nâsir was emir then Caliph omeyyade of Cordoue.

He is the son of Muhammad, prince omeyyade died before his father `Abd Allah. He was born in 889. He succeeded his large father `Abd Allah like emir Omeyyade de Cordoue in 912. He reconstitutes a state unified as of 917 and representing Moslem orthodoxy, he decided to free himself definitively from the political authority and nun from Baghdad by allotting the titles from Caliph (929), Amur Al-Mu' min (" prince of the croyants") and Al-Nasir Li-DIN Allah (" the victorious one for the religion of Dieu"). He died on November 16th 961 with Cordoue. His/her son Al-Hakam II succeeded to him.

Biography

He transforms and embellishes Cordoue and fixes his residence at Madinat Al-Zahra, city created for his favorite Zahra with eight kilometers of Cordoue. He maintains positive ratios with the Juifs and the Christians. He has for advising and friendly Recemundo, bishop of Cordoue, “ Rabbi Ben Zaïd ”. The caliph takes in heart to convene itself the Concile S. His doctor is the Jew Séfarade Hasdaï Ben Shatprut, at the same time philosophical and poet, then diplomatic of the Caliph.

In 932, it takes Tolède after a seat which inflicted a terrible famine with the inhabitants. The caliphate enters then during a time of peace and prosperity.

Starting from 950, it has authority on the the Maghreb of Tangier to Algiers and runs up against the attacks of the Fatimides. In 955, its ambassador Hasdaï Ben Shatprut obtains an peace agreement with the king Ordoño III of the Asturies and the duke of Castille.

Under its reign, the Grande Mosque of Cordoue is again arranged (rebuilding of the minaret, in particular). Its court accommodates intellectuals, poets, musicians and Juifs artists, Moslem or Christian.

With its death in 961, the Califat of Cordoue is with its apogee. Cordoue probably counts a million inhabitants and is with Baghdad and Constantinople one of the three plus big cities of the world.
