Holy Abbon de Fleury , born towards 945 deceased in 1004 with Réole, was a monk reforming Benedictine and one of the largest scientists of his time.
Biography
Offered like Oblat to the Abbey of Fleury (the Saint-Benoit-on-Loire), it studies the Liberal arts there, before continuing its formation with Paris, Rheims and Orleans. It directs then the school of Fleury (965) whose radiation is under its considerable direction.Considered scientist, it makes authority as regards Comput (calculation of time for the ecclesiastical uses), of Astronomie, Musique, Astrologie and Arithmétique.
At the request of the archbishop of York, Oswald, it directs the school of the monastery of Ramsey. It writes there the life of holy Edmond. Returned in France, he is elected abbot of Fleury in 988.
He takes initially the party of the archbishop of Rheims Arnulf against Hugues Capet, then, sent by Hugues Capet to Rome to arrange its matrimonial businesses, he finally manages to convince the king to subject to the rules Église.
There remains a listened adviser of Hugues Capet. It defends with heat its monastery against Arnoul, near to the capétiens and bishop to Orleans. It receives in its combat the support of the pontifical capacity. Lawyer on this occasion, it proposed a tripartite vision of the company, where the monastic order precedes.
He dies assassinated, killed by a blow of lance, to be itself interposed in a conflict with the Monastère of Réole (the Gironde) on November 13rd 1004.
Its festival is celebrated on November 13rd.
Works
Author of many works on the comput, the grammar and the reform of the Church, as of an Apologetic against the Arnoul bishop of Orleans which is a true treaty about the world, it is especially known by his correspondence and the collection of Canons where it tries to work out a political system of the royalty, the episcopate and Monachisme. He also wrote a Vie of saint Edmond and a summary of the lives of popes inspired by the Liber pontificalis . Its works were collected in the Acta sanctorum ordinis Sanci Benedicti . One finds some letters of Abbon in volume X of the Recueil of the French histories by D. Bouquet.
Posterity
In 2004, the towns of Réole and the Saint-Benoit-on-Loire celebrated the millenium of its disappearance at the time of laic and religious festivities. Réole saw assembling a large spectacle mixing theater, music, dance and song under the direction of the musician Marielle Guillon, like various conferences and exposures, and the Saint-Benoit-on-Loire was spectator of many historical conferences.
