Abbey of Prémontrés de Pont-à-Mousson

The Holy-Marie-Major abbey of the Prémontrés of Pont-à-Mousson known also under the name of is a vast building of the 18th century located in the Saint Martin's day district at Pont-à-Mousson, in the department of the Meurthe-et-Moselle, in France.

History

Following the decision of the abbot of Holy-Marie-with-Wood, Were used as Lairuelz, to transfer its abbey to Pont-à-Mousson, a first abbey was built at the beginning of the XVIIe century on the current site, near the university founded by the Jésuites. Of this first abbey, there remains only one porch, an arc and two gates of style Louis XIII.

Work of the current abbey began in 1705, under the reign of Léopold 1st, Duc of Lorraine and finished in 1735. Thomas Mordillac, architect traditional, was in charge of the design of the abbey. The architect Nicolas Pierson took over. It will be noted that these two architects were them-even Prémontrés. At the time of construction, the abbey of Holy-Marie-Major is the head office of the prémontrée congregation of the antique rigor, that is to say forty abbeys, which perhaps contributed financially to the construction of this sumptuous building.

The abbey was partially destroyed in 1771 by a fire.

In 1792, the Prémontrés Fathers were expelled.

At the XIXe century, the old abbey sheltered the Small Seminar diocesan; it was used as Hôpital during the Franco-German Guerre of 1870.

After 1906, it became the property of the town of Pont-à-Mousson. It was again destroyed during the Second world war, during the release of Pont-à-Mousson (September 1944.

The rebuilding of the abbey began only in 1957, when it was decided to make " Prémontrés" a Lorraine Arts center with the image of the Abbey of Royaumont.
