possible Discovery of the America (Vinland) by Leif Erikson. Towards 986, a close relative of Erik the Red, Bjarni Herjólfsson, come from Norway to join his/her father with the Greenland, was diverted by the winds and saw, in the west, a new ground. Leif the Happy one, wire of Erik, assembles a forwarding to explore this unknown ground. It reaches Helluland (“ground of the Stones punts”, undoubtedly the Baffin Island), Markland (“ground of the Forests”, probably the Labrador) then Vinland, where the vine pushes (?) and the wild corn where it spends the winter then turns over towards Greenland. Several forwardings are undertaken thereafter, of which those of Thorwald, brother of Leif Erikson (1000 - 1003), of Thorfinn Karlsefni and Freydi, girl of Erik (1010). In Vinland, the Vikings of Karlsefni meet natives, whom they call the Skræling and with which they make initially exchanges (red fabrics and weapons against furs). But vis-a-vis the hostility of the natives, the Viking S must be finally folded up.

Icelandic annals mention for 1121 that “the Eiríkr bishop of Greenland from went away to the research of Vinland” and for 1347 a voyage in Markland brought back by the crew of a boat come from the Greenland.
