57e regiment of infantry of line

The 57e Régiment of Infantry of Line is a regiment of the French Army, heir to the regiment of Beauvaisis , and a tradition which lasts since 1667. he knew since his creation date a quasi uninterrupted existence to the service of France. He glorieusement took part in the actions of monarchy, the Revolution, the Empire and the Republic during the last world wars, in France and beyond his borders.

  • 1797: Battle of Rivoli and Favorite C' is after the combat of Favorite (suburb of Mantoue), that the 57e gains its nickname " Terrible the 57e Half-brigade that nothing arrête".

  • 1800: Engen, Moeskirch, Biberach, Hochstedt, Nordlingen, Oberhausen, Neubourg, Landshut, and Hohenlinden
  • 1805: Memmingen, Ulm, and Austerlitz the 57e of Line belongs to Division Vandamme in the 4 {{E}} body of Soult. It forms part (with the 46 {{E}} of Line) of the brigade Férey (called " the brigade of Fer") who will be in the middle of the action with Austerlitz (the Férey brigade is detached there near division St-Hilaire) but will have very few losses.)
  • 1806: Iéna (the 57e will not take part in 1806 in the battle of Iéna, where it belongs to the troops in reserve. On the other hand, one finds it in the continuation of Blücher which will be completed by the catch of Lübeck.

  • 1809: Thann, Abensberg, Eckmuhl, Ratisbon, Essling, and Wagram. (The 57e belongs to the army corps of the Marshal Davout, Division St-Hilaire, Brigade Lorencez. Its 3 battalions align, on April 16th, 1934 men.

In the Bulletin of the Large army reporting the business of Thann, one can read " … 13 years ago, the 57e was called " Terrible" ; it justified well this nickname with the battle of Thann, where it approached and successively demolishes 6 Austrian regiments… ".)

  • 1812: Mohilov, Moskowa, Malojaroslavetz, Viasma, and Krasnoe (One of its most glorious hours is during the battle of the Moskowa (in general called Borodino in the foreign literature). Marbot, which was side of Polotsk at this time, has, in its Memories, an eulogistic word for Terrible the 57e, which was faithful to its reputation.)

From 1815 to 1848

May 18th, 1830, the 57e, then in garrison in Briançon, sends its first two battalions in Morée. Reinforced with 637 men of the 34e and 58e IH, the 2 battalions embark, in Toulon, on the Galathée and 5 tradind ships. They unload in Navarin on July 15th. The 1e battalion and the 2 companies of elite of 2nd will confine in Modon. The remainder of the 2nd remaining battalion with Navarin.

In 1830, the Staff and the 2nd battalion are recalled in France. They embark on December 28th on the Cornélie and a transport. The same day, the first 3 companies of the 1st battalion come to replace leaving them in Navarin. As from on January 8th, 1831, the 6 companies of the center of the 1st battalion are in Navarin, the 2 companies of elite remaining in Modon.

February 11th, 1833, the 1st battalion leaves in its turn Morée to regain France.

Second Republic

Second Empire

  • 1855 : Sit of Sébastopol.

  • 1870 : Army of Metz, battles of Borny, Rezonville, St-Privat.

With the battle of Rézonville, the Chabal second lieutenant seizes the flag of the 16th IR Hessois. It is one of the two enemy flags captured during this war.

In garrison in Bordeaux until 1913 (1 battalion with Libourne).

First World War

August 5th, 1914, when it embarks in 3 trains, the regiment includes/understands 60 officers, 179 warrant officers and 3039 corporals and soldiers.

In June 1940, in the area of Rethel, the regiment fights in Voncq (June 9th and 10th) before the retirement (until June 23rd).

From 1945 to our days

Reconstituted in 1944 (1 only battalion), it will be then dissolved (its elements coming to reinforce the 403e Régiment of Anti-aircraft artillery).

The regiment is reconstituted on April 20th, 1956 and will take share with the operations in Algeria.

Dissolved in 1962 on this territory, it has as a heir a 57e battalion to infantry and a center of instruction of 57e IH in metropolis

Reconstituted on July 1st, 1964 under regiment-commando of the forces of the D.O.T
