the Lombards of Pannonia (20 000 men), led by their king Alboin, shaken by the Avars, joined by Gépides, Sarmates, Thuringes, Saxon and Bavarois go on the the Friuli (April 1st), take Aquilée (May 20th) and occupy the Venezia (except the islands where the population took refuge). They attack the Provence but are rejected by the Francs. Encumbered by the presence of the families and the luggage, they advance slowly. At the sides of the warriors, whole people move (200 to 300.000 people).
- Lombards occupy most of Italy. Byzantine resistance is very low, because the principal effort is dedicated in the East and in Balkans. Only the cities resist. The population, overpowered tax and victim of a debatable system of spoliation, sees arriving Lombards with a benevolent neutrality.
- Byzance replaces the military government by a civil government in Italy.
