3sat is a Television channel German-speaking public general practitioner international and without publicity of the groups of German public television (ZDF and ARD), Austrian (ORF), and Swiss (SRG Swiss SR idea via SF Schweizer Fernsehen).

History of the chain

3sat was born from the will of the three German-speaking groups of public television, ZDF in Germany, ORF in Austria and SRG in Suisse via its German-speaking Switzerland subsidiary company SF DRS, to constitute an international television channel relaying their programs, with the image of the French-speaking international chain TV5 created in January of the same year. It started to diffuse its programs by satellite on December 1st 1984, with ZDF like principal partner of the co-operation, even if the decisions were made jointly.

In 1990, old DFF (Deutscher Fernsehfunk) of the German Democratic republic became member of 3sat and it was planned to change the name into 4sat . It was finally decided to keep 3sat. December 31st 1991, the participation of the DFF stopped at the same time as the Est-allemand diffuser ceased existing following the German Réunification.

December 1st 1993, following the stop of its chain per satellite Eins More, ARD joined 3sat.

Sit

The chain diffuses its programs since its studios located in the broadcast transmitting station 2 of ZDF at Mainz - Lerchenberg which it also divides with ARTE Deutschland.

Diffusion

The chain is mainly diffused in Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland, even if it is possible to receive it on almost all Europe thanks to the satellite Astra 1 (19.2°Est). The chain is also diffused on the TNT in Germany and Austria, like on some European cable networks.
