The theater of the Gymnasium is a theater located not far from the Canebière at Marseilles.
It was built on the site of the Couvent of Lyons the by Desfougères and Audibert, the September 13rd 1804; the convent having been destroyed during the Revolution.
One played there of the light comedy S and the melodramas with actors such as Désaugiers, Miss George, Hadingue, Genin, etc
Starting from the Second Empire, one played there then of the Opérette S.
At the 20th century, it took again its role of room of theater with actors like Louis Jouvet, Jean Weber, but also like room in.liaison.with Jacques Brel, Reda Cairo or Charles Aznavour.
It closed its doors in 1980 for reasons of outdatedness and reopened in 1986 with the recovery by the municipality and the American patron Armand Hammer.
