1998 in France
The year 1998 will have been marked in France by the Mouvement of the unemployed and the world cup of Football.
In front of the extent of the movement of the unemployed, Lionel Jospin grants a premium of 1.000 francs. Associations of unemployed persons are however not satisfied and the movement continues until June with the occupation of the ANPE and the offices of the Assedic. The unemployed continue to claim a revaluation of the social minimums. Association AC! request thus so that the RMI either carried to the height of the SMIC (or approximately 5.000 francs monthly against 2.500 francs in 1998). Finally, the government puts an end to the occupations by repression: the occupied offices are gradually done everything to evacuate by the police force.
Associations of unemployed persons also manage to channel the movement with the claim of the lowering of the duration of the work at 35 hours weekly. The 35 hours law, envisaged in the program of Lionel Jospin, is voted by the National Assembly during the year. The movement of the unemployed obviously facilitated the adoption of this law. Measurement is however discussed because it is also accompanied by the annualisation of the working time. In practice, it slows down also the wage increase.
