1977 in France - 1978 - 1979 in France
  • 16 - March 17th: Oil slick in Brittany with the shipwreck of the giant tanker Amoco Cadiz with broad of Portsall. Chartered by the company Shell, and pertaining to a ship-owner of Chicago, it transports 230  000 tons of oil coming from Saudi Arabia and Iran towards Rotterdam. 360 km of Breton coasts, with Brest to bay of Saint-Brieuc, are soiled. The Plan Polmar is started. Two years of efforts will be necessary to erase the traces of the disaster mainly. After a long procedure, the company Amoco Corp will be condemned the January 24th 1992 to pour a billion francs at the French State and 212 million at the Mixed trade-union of defense and protection of the Breton communes. The government will transfer 100 million with the common disaster victims.

  • 12 - March 19th: legislative elections in France: short victory of the Right-hand side: 289 seats against 201, for the first time for a long time, the PS exceeds the PCF.

  • December 19th: The largest power failure in France. It deprived of electricity 75% of the territory during several hours.
  • December 29th: Le Monde opens its columns with Robert Faurisson where he speaks about the “alleged gas chambers hitlériennes and of the alleged genocide of the Jews”.
