1968 with the cinema
Events
- the cinema news of this year will be particularly marked in France by what one called “the Langlois business”, which will be related to the events of May 1968.
- the business begins the February 9th when the board of directors from the French Cinémathèque, elects Pierre Barbin to replace Henri Langlois, with the artistic director and technique. Pierre Barbin, former head of the festivals of Turns and Annecy, is suspected of being controlled by the State for évincer Henri Langlois, emblematic figure of the cinematographic memory. However, the Cineclub is certainly financed mainly by the state but remains an independent association.
- This news ignites the cinematographic medium at once. A Defense committee of the Cineclub, composed inter alia François Truffaut and Jean Renoir, combined with several associations and personalities denounce an operation. As of the February 14th, a demonstration is organized close to the Palate of Chaillot, brutally repressed by a police intervention. Another, the March 18th, street of Courcelles, at the time of which Jean-Pierre Léaud reads a declaration of the Defense committee of the cineclub, is concluded in the same way. The demonstrations continue, in particular in Grenoble, the March 21st where, at the time of a meeting, Pierre Mendès France gives his support for the committee.
- April 22nd: Vis-a-vis the pressure, Henri Langlois is finally reinstated but the event sufficiently heated the spirits so that one finds the echo of it during May.
- the May 13rd, by solidarity with the Parisian movement, of the students invade the Cannes festival and make the seat, preventing projections. The May 18th, several personalities whose François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Claude Lelouch, Claude Berri, Jean-Pierre Léaud which was actively implied in the Langlois business, are made relay of the dispute coed. The palate of the festivals is the object of a permanent assembly. Monica Vitti, Louis Malle and Roman Polanski resigns of the jury while Alain Resnais and Carlos Will know decide to withdraw their film of the competition. The May 19th, the organizers close the festival. No price will be decreed.
- February 19th: The International federation of Film Producer associations (FIAPF) notes, in particular in France and in Italy, an abusive tax on the cinematographic exploitation and begins to make so that cinematographic works are considered, following the example books, like products culurels, exempted customs duties. It also rises against a project of Registration of copyright.
- February 27th: Suppression of the integration of the additional special Tax at the price of the places. The tariffs of entries being the subject of a blocking, the rooms will be able to increase as much their margins.
- March 1st: The National federation of the French Cinemas protests once again against the price freeze of the places.
- April 10th: Ceremony of the Oscars for 1967. That of best film is allotted to In the heat of the night . Better realizer: Mike Nichols for The Graduate . Better actor: Rod Steiger for In the heat of the night . Better actress: Katharine Hepburn for Devine which comes to dine this evening . Male best supporting role: George Kennedy for Cool Hand Luke . Female best supporting role: Estelle Parsons for Bonnie and Clyde .
- September 4th: Projection of film of Pier Paolo Pasolini, Theorem ( Sivano Mangano, Terence Stamp, Anne Wiazemsky) with the Festival of Venice. The film leaves to Rome the September 7th; the copies are put under sequestration the 13 on decision of the public prosecutor of Rome, the day when the Osservatore Romano , the official press agency of the Vatican considers film “negative and dangerous”.
- October 10th: With the Festival of Locarno, the Soviet Union, GDR and the Hungary are not represented at the request of the one of not sworn, following the occupation of the Czechoslovakia.
- With the the United States, the Motion Picture Association off America (MPAA) adopts on November 1st a classification of works, intended to protect the minor public: Very public film (" G"), with parental accompaniment (" PG"), film prohibited with less than 13 years (" PG-13"), film prohibited with less than 17 years except parental accompaniment (" R"), film prohibited with less than 17 years (" NC-17"). They are the producers themselves which will proceed to classification because there does not exist in the United States from federal Commission of censure.
- UNESCO adopts unanimously the November 20th a resolution recommending freedom of movement of cinematographic works to the image of the book.
- November 20th: The Kenya nationalizes the whole of its production and cinematographic distribution.
- December 6th: Several Parisian rooms of the Gaumont circuit withdraw poster suddenly the film the Large Detergent of Jean-Pierre Mocky to replace it by the western Shalako of Edward Dmytryk. The business is submitted at once in front of the court which orders the December 11th then the December 16th with the Gaumont network to give film in exploitation in accordance with the signed contract which envisaged a minimal threshold of entries to be reached. The distributer however refuses to hear reason and appealed.
