- James Cook undertakes on a 1768 its first great journey in the southern Pacific. It accompanies, by the Cape Horn, of the British astronomers who will observe with Tahiti, island just discovered, the Transit of Venus in front of the Sun the June 3rd 1769.
- October 6th: James Cook unloads in New Zealand where it takes the reading of 3 860 km of coasts. Although it did not have Chronomètre during this voyage and that it thus could not determine longitude in the absolute, it carries out coastal charts of New Zealand of such a precision that they will be used until the 19th century. It sails round the two islands and crosses the strait which separates them (today the Détroit of Cook), proving thus that they did not constitute the southernmost point of a wider continent.
