Events

Temüjin and Toghril conducts a campaign against the Tatars and the Merkit. With the autumn, Tatars undergo a decisive defeat. Temüjin divides the survivors as slaves among the clans which joined it. Toghril pack Merkit.
Taken and plundering of Vârânasî (Bénarès) by the Moslems. Its king Jayachandra is killed.

the viceroy ayyubide of Egypt Al-Kamel makes an agreement with Venice. Al-Kamel guarantees to Venetian the access to the ports of the delta, like Alexandria or Damiette, and their protection offer and assistance. N the other hand, Venice promises not to support any Western forwarding against Egypt. The Venetian ones however made an agreement with Western princes envisaging the transport of almost warriors 35.000 Francs towards Egypt against the promise of a money large sum, and they prefer to keep this secret treaty. They are decided not to break any of their engagements.

November 23rd: Zara is taken and plundered with the profit of Venice. The pope excommunicates Vénitiens and cross, but raises at once the sorrow for the latter.
During winter 1202/1203, Alexis IV Angel request assistance of the Cross to restore his/her father Isaac II on the throne of Constantinople. In exchange of this assistance, he promises raised payments, the contribution of the Byzantines to the crusade and the union of the Churches. In spite of the opposition of part of the army and the legate, the project is adopted.
