  • April 13rd: Alain IV Fergent becomes duke of Breton (end in 1112).
  • May: Robert Guiscard, Normand combined Gregoire VII takes again Rome, but plunderings cause the hostility of the population. Gregoire takes refuge in the south and dies in Salerno in 1085. Apparently overcome, it has in fact successful to make papacy independent and to make apply the ecclesiastical reform partly.

  • Bruno of Cologne creates a monastery in the massive of Large Chartreuse. Towards 1200, 39 establishments adopted the rules of the Grande Chartreuse.
